For A Successful Semester

Please review this section for all you need to know about your spring semester. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Red Pass & Packages

Students with red passes may no longer pickup packages and mail from the package centers at Hill and Harnwell or the package lockers across campus.  Residents will have two options related to packages if they have a red pass:

  1. You can reach out to and arrange for a friend to pick up your package.  Note that the friend must have access to the same package room as the resident with the red pass.
  2. You can also wait until you no longer have a red pass to pick up your mail or package.  No mail or packages will be returned to sender until further notice.

Please reach out to with any questions related to mail and packages and red passes.

Thank you for your patience and for doing your part to keep campus safe.

Students cannot have guests and visitors, including family members, in their campus residence (exceptions may be granted for move-in and move-out periods). Guests are defined as individuals who are not currently enrolled as University of Pennsylvania students. Visitors are defined as currently enrolled University of Pennsylvania students who are not assigned to the room, suite, or apartment that they are visiting.

For more information, please review College Houses & Academic Services site.

Each College House and Sansom Place is equipped with laundry facilities with electric washers and dryers in number proportionate to the number of residents in the community. As an added amenity of living in a College House or Sansom Place, there is no charge to do laundry.

Residents are asked to be respectful of each other by attending to their wash and removing it promptly when the load is completed. Residents should monitor their laundry’s progress either in person, online or via text via our Wash Alert system. This web based program allows you to see what machines are available and in use! Sign in with penn6389 to view available washers and dryers. You can have an email or text sent to you when machines become available. When possible, residents should limit their use of the laundry room by washing full loads of clothing. We recommend folding clothes in your room rather than in the laundry room.

Please be aware that there are limitations as to how many residents can be in the laundry rooms at the same time.  Please adhere to the these guidelines and maintain physical distancing as outlined. Each laundry room will be supplied with a wipe station. Residents are encouraged to use the wipes to disinfect machines before using or to use the wipes to avoid touching the machine door handles and buttons. As always, please be sure to wear your face covering at all times while outside of your room. Residents are able to use any of the laundry rooms in their specific residential building.

Face coverings are an additional step to help slow the spread of COVID-19 when combined with every day preventive actions and physical distancing. Cloth face coverings should be washed before initial use, and after each use. It is important to always remove face coverings correctly and wash your hands after handling or touching a used face covering. Include your face coverings with your regular laundry. Use regular detergent and the warmest appropriate water setting. Use the highest heat setting and leave in the dryer until completely dry.

The Department of Residential Services works closely with the Division of Public Safety to ensure the safety and security of residents in the College Houses and Sansom Place. Essential elements to residential safety and security include contract guard staff, card swipe stations, and mechanical and optical turnstiles.

In order to access the College Houses and Sansom Place, residents must present their PennCard at the front entrance of the residential building and to pass through the security portal. Residents must hover their card above the card reader/keypad at the portal and wait for the light to flash green and the door will unlock or the portal will open.

Residents of the College Houses and Sansom Place are expected to carry their PennCards at all times that they are on campus. Residential Services and the Division of Public Safety guidelines require residents to present their PennCards at either the security portal or guard desk to gain entry to their residence. Residents who cannot present their PennCard when entering must proceed to the Information Center of their House in order to sign in. The Information Center staff will verify their identity before allowing the resident to sign themselves in.

When entering and exiting the lobbies or Information Centers of the College Houses or Sansom Place residents are required to wear a face covering at all times. Please do not congregate or loiter in the lobby areas or hallways.

Please see this comprehensive guide from CHAS:

The University will be providing one microfridge (mini-fridge/freezer and microwave) in each on-campus room or suite without a kitchen or kitchenette. For apartments with kitchens, the University will be providing microwaves.

All of us in the Penn community have a communal responsibility, as we continue to navigate these challenging and unprecedented times, to balance the health and safety needs of our community with the University’s core missions. More information can be found here.
